“You’ll never be leader”: Jones to Turnbull

Staff Writer

In a heated interview with Alan Jones on 2GB, Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull has denied the Liberal Party is in a state of disunity.

Jones was patronising Turnbull when he asked him to repeat these words: “As a senior member of the Abbott Government I want to say here I am totally supportive of the Abbott-Hockey strategy for Budget repair.”

Turnbull replied: “Alan, I am not going to take dictation from you. I am a Cabinet minister. I support unreservedly and wholeheartedly every element in the Budget. Every single one.”

Jones accused the MP of sounding ‘nervous’ and ‘angry’ as they discussed the Budget.

Turnbull said he was distressed that people, including Jones and Andrew Bolt, had “set out to suggest that there is dissention in the government that there are challenges to Tony’s leadership.”

Jones then told the minister: “You have no hope ever of being the leader.”

The slanging match continued as the men discussed Clive Palmer and the future of the ABC.

Turnbull was this week named the most influential man in Australian radio.
