Wendy Stapleton: “Radio airplay is a totally different ball game now”

Pop rock singer-songwriter Wendy Stapleton fondly remembers her ‘crazy rock chick’ days when she was at the forefront of Australia’s music scene.

“The craziest part was during my time with Wendy and the Rockets,” Wendy shares with me on the latest episode of the Food Bytes podcast, which drops tomorrow.

“I’ve got to say that was pretty wild. And it was in the halcyon days of Australian music.”

“It was nuts! It was really good.”

But Wendy feels for today’s artists, who struggle to get their music heard.

“All the radio stations – we had so many fabulous DJs and everyone had their Australian Top 10 or whatever – and they gave everyone a go,” Wendy remembers.

“God, I’d hate to be trying to get my stuff played now.”

Today’s artists including Natalie Gauci and Mitch Tambo have previously shared their own challenges when it comes to getting radio airplay.

“It’s a totally different ball game,” says Wendy. “I think it’s out of whack. I think we need much more Australian content that should be played.”
