Virginia Trioli has announced she is stepping down as Mornings presenter on ABC Radio Melbourne.

Her final show will be tomorrow – Friday, 1st September – which is nearly 4 years to the day she first took on the role.

In breaking the news on air this morning, Trioli revealed she has been dealing with multiple illnesses within her family, and that now is the right time to depart.

“It is very hard to leave,” Trioli told listeners. “This is and has always been one of the most important chairs in broadcasting in this country.”

“This is where accountability and scrutiny reside.”

Trioli admits she hasn’t always made friends with people in power.

“From the moment I took on this role I’ve been welcomed, challenged and at times admonished by a passionate radio audience.”

“It’s been a joy but life makes its own demands, and now is the right time to heed those.”

Trioli also revealed she will be moving into a new TV role, presenting a prime time arts show in 2024.

Trioli’s replacement will be revealed tomorrow.

The ABC’s Managing Director David Anderson joined Trioli in the studio, praising her for her work over a challenging recent years, her interview skills … and for holding people to account.

Why should the tax payers have to pay for a prime time arts show? No thanks

… maybe because the ABC Charter requires the ABC “to encourage and promote the musical, dramatic and other performing arts in Australia”?

It might be time to review that charter because most people would rather see money spent on projects like upgrading our hospital rather than wasting it on silly programs that no one watches
