RIP Ray (Raymond) Kerr
Ray (Raymond) Kerr died on May 4, aged 83. He was the manager of community station 99.7 Bridge FM and had worked in radio since the 60s.
His son Christopher shared on LinkedIn:
“Dad grew up on a dairy farm in Colac, was drawn to the local radio station 3CS, which led to a career that he loved starting in the 60s right up until his final days working at Redcliffe community station 99.7 Bridge FM. He’d just turned 83.
Some of you may have worked with, been mentored by, or had your careers started by Dad. I’ve had some lovely calls, texts and funny stories already. From 3CS to 7BU, 3HA, 5SE, 5MU, 5DN, 5CC & 5CS, 2EC & Power FM Bega. Announcer to sales to general manager and board member, sometimes all at once.
I’ve learned caring for Mum in the last few years that the simplest, happiest childhood memories are the most enduring. For me, with Dad, I think they would be:
– Sitting with Dad while he called the local footy, trying to help match the player numbers to names on the list (I was told today that his calls were a league above the rest).
– Hanging out in the 5SE broadcast bus on outside broadcasts, pressing all the buttons I shouldn’t.
– We won’t mention the amount of time I spent bulk erasing carts (erasing big cassettes with an electromagnet) on school holidays… which could explain a lot actually…
Dad also leaves behind my sisters Caroline, Morelle, Tara, and grandchildren Mariarne, Riley, Ruby, and Cooper, Uncle Doug & Aunty Margaret, and family who all miss him deeply too.”
A celebration of Ray’s life will be held in the coming days and shared on the Bridge FM socials.
