Vale Peter Harry

Staff Writer

Sad news today that the firefighter who died at a house fire in the Melbourne town of Gisborne was Peter Harry, the Operations Manager at MCM Media.

His brother-in-law, Peter Morris, said:

"What 48-year-old volunteer goes out, who is pretty healthy, to help fight a fire which he's done hundreds of times before and doesn't come home under these circumstances? To say we are in shock is an understatement. We can't believe what has happened."

Police Minister and Acting Victorian Premier Peter Ryan said it looks as if his death was not related to dealing with the fire.

"The reasons for his death will be the subject of the course of separate inquiries and I don’t want to comment any further about that. I do send though, to his wife and and to his children, the heartfelt sympathies of all Victorians."

"This is a tragic day for the family."

"It is a time to reflect on the extraordinary contribution which our volunteers make in ensuring, as best they can, that people are saved from the ever-present threat of fire."

Our condolences go out to his family and the staff he worked with at MCM.
