Vale Mike Gibson

Staff Writer

Award winning sports journalist Mike Gibson has passed away at age 75.

Mike started out in print before making the move to radio. He joined George Moore in 1976 on 2SM. The  Gibson and Moore show dominated the celebrity scene at the time, and in 1979 Mike jumped to 2GB.

Mike would later be known across Australia, and perhaps is best remembered for his time as co-anchor of  Channel Nine’s Wide World of Sports. He launched the show with Ian Chappell in 1981. Mike was with Nine until 1988, when he joined Channel Ten.

By 1997 Mike moved to Foxtel and presented The Back Page, alongside Billy Birmingham. Coincidentally, Billy had previously ‘sent up’ Mike Gibson on his 1987 The Twelfth Man album, Wired World of Sports.

Mike retired in 2012. He died at his home on the New South Wales Central Coast.
