Triple M on top in GfK Survey 1 for Newcastle

Reporter

102.9 Triple M continues its reign in the first GfK Survey of 2025 for Newcastle, dominating the local radio landscape overall with a 22.8 share (+1.7), still well clear of its SCA stablemate Hit 106.9 (-3.3 to 15.2).

Triple M’s Tanya & Steve continue to be a formidable force in Breakfast, gaining 0.6 to move to a 24.6 share, leading Hit’s Jess & Ducko (-3.0 to 15.8).

triple j increased its share (+2.8 to 11.2) to hold down third spot in Breakfast.

105.3 NEW FM’s Nic & Joel rose 2.3 for a 9.9 share, placing them fourth in brekky.

Triple M enjoyed significant share increases in Breakfast, Mornings and Afternoons.

SCA Head of Regional Content Blair Woodcock said “We’re incredibly proud of today’s results out of Newcastle, with Triple M and Hit 106.9 together commanding 63.6% of the 25–54 market – a reflection of the strong connection SCA’s unbeaten duopoly has built with local audiences in the region.”

“Congratulations to Triple M’s Tanya & Steve on yet another dominant result – marking their 32nd consecutive win as Newcastle’s #1 Breakfast show (People 10+) and 11 years on top! Tanya Wilks and Steve Graham are two of Australia’s most trusted and engaging broadcasters, and it’s fitting that Tanya celebrates her 25th year on the network with another incredible survey result. With a huge audience of more than 184,000 people across Newcastle, this is a milestone moment for Triple M.”

Hit 106.9 has also had a solid start to the year. It’s been fantastic to welcome Ducko (Nick Allen-Ducat) back to the studio for the start of Survey 2 following the arrival of his first child. Alongside Jess (Jess Farchione), the duo continues to deliver an engaging, entertaining Breakfast show. They remain #1 for Women 25–54 and People under 40 — two of our most important demographics.”

“Thanks to our entire Newcastle team for such a strong start to the year. Off the back of an extraordinary 2024, we’re excited to keep building momentum and entertaining our growing audience throughout 2025.”

NEW FM enjoyed strong growth across key dayparts with gains in both its Breakfast and Drive shows and a standout performance from its 100% Live and Local night show, which surged from a 10.4 to a 13.3 share.

The station says these results mark a turning point for NEWFM, which made the strategic decision last year to become 100% Newcastle Made once again.

It’s a big effort from our live and local team who live and breathe Newcastle and the Hunter. Also a massive thank you to our loyal advertisers and listeners who appreciate a live and LOCAL product,” said NEWFM General Manager Guy Ashford.

Unbeatable. Tanya & Steve should be the example for all Triple M regional shows. Ryzy should be added to the lineup as he contribute more than most anchors!!!!

For a supposedly competitive market, Newcastle is pretty much a one station city for commercial radio, isn’t it? Been quite a while now since a non-Triple M (or KOFM before it) 102.9 station has finished in #1 spot!

Perhaps it’s a combination of both 102.9 having a strong product and the type of place Newcastle is generally. However, you’d think a better operated 2HD/New FM would be more formidable competitors to the SCA duopoly.
