Tony Schibeci departs 1116 SEN as staff cuts continue

The clear out of Melbourne sports broadcaster 1116 SEN has continued with the departure of another listener favourite.

In a Facebook post overnight, Tony Schibeci confirmed he’d received the phone call that he’d been “expecting”. After 14 years with the station, he’s hosted his last Ultimate Wrap show on SEN.

The Sunday morning host went on to say that he’s not “angry” or “bitter”, but was grateful to have been doing what he’d done for so long.

However, he might be away from the microphone for too long – Schibeci says there are “exciting things in the wind” which he plans on revealing soon. He is currently also a ground announcer at The MCG, but it’s unclear where he might end up in radio land.

His departure is one of many changes rolled out by Craig Hutchison in the weeks since the announced merger of Crocmedia and SEN’s owner Pacific Star Network, with Schibeci joining the likes of general manager Cathy Thomas, as well as announcers Matt Granland, Mike Fine and Kevin Hillier.

While a series of appointments are expected, only two have so been announced; that of former ABC broadcaster Gerard Whateley and AFLW star Daisy Pearce.

It’s yet to be seen what other changes Hutchison has planned for the future as he looks to stamp his authority on the struggling station.
