Tim Ross motors on with Series 2 of Cars That Made Australia podcast

Series Two of the Tim Ross podcast Cars That Made Australia has just landed.

And automotive nostalgia has certainly been on Tim’s mind, as the radio host, writer and comedian prepares to head to New Zealand for a three-city tour called Architecture is Ace.

It got him thinking about a previous visit to Auckland about fifteen years ago.

Ross had been there promoting a book and, after a run of radio interviews, he had some time to kill.

So, he popped into MOTAT, New Zealand’s Museum of Transport and Technology.

“Despite one of the first attractions being a bog-standard BMX bolted to the wall, it was actually quite fun,” Tim remembers.

One of his favourite items on display was a Kiwi police car from the 1970s – a grey Holden Kingswood.

“This piqued my interest for a couple of reasons. Firstly, because the Kingswood was a really terrible choice of police car due to the way they handled in a pursuit.”

“Secondly, the blurb under the car described how most of these Kingswood police cars had been taken off the road in New Zealand because grey is the most difficult colour to see, and they ended up constantly being in accidents.”

Episode One of Cars That Made Australia explores the story of the much-loved Ford Falcon.

“I absolutely love making this podcast,” says Tim.

And it’s not just for car nuts.

“They’re cracking yarns that tell us a great deal about Australian society.”

You can listen to it here or wherever you get your podcasts.
