Thunderbolts and lightning (and very spooky timing) at 3HA

Wild weather across western Victoria certainly kept the tech team at 3HA Hamilton on its toes this week, with a spectacular lighting bolt striking the station’s transmitter tower, sending out a huge shower of sparks.
Ace Radio Group Technology Manager Brendan McIntosh tells Radio Today “We had a big hit on that tower around ten years ago that actually took us off air. This one just resulted in a high VSWR.”

“So after turning the power down during the day, Al Reynolds and myself spent Wednesday night replacing a connector or two that had been blown apart, and giving it a slight retune. Just in time for the next storm to roll through!’

The spookiest part? Guess what song was being played on air at 3HA at the exact time the lightning struck?
