A landmark in broadcasting for The South West’s Triple M as the station notches up 80 years on-air in Bunbury.

It was launched as 6TZ in 1939 when Australia faced the prospect of another World War.

With its first broadcast, it became the 100th commercial radio station in the country.

80 years

Newspaper accounts of the launch reported clear reception for miles around, with congratulatory telegrams from new listeners of the station.

To mark its 80th anniversary, Triple M celebrated with a 3-hour special on Alan For Breakfast and on The Drive Home with Cliff, bringing back past announcers to reflect on their time at 6TZ.

The station also gave away $80 an hour, while staff celebrated with a huge 80th birthday party morning tea.
