“The most meaningful radio we’ve ever done.” 92.7 MIX FM shines a light on autism

Reporter

Young adults with autism have taken over the airwaves at 92.7 MIX FM on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

It wraps up a unique week in which the station has shone a bright light on autism, the initiative providing a platform for people to share their stories, fostering understanding and inclusivity.

As far as Drive co-host Sami Muirhead is concerned, it’s the most meaningful radio she and Todd Widdicombe – her on-air partner of 19 years – have ever done.

The reaction to an emotional open letter from Sami has gone viral, reaching 56,656 accounts.

41% of the reach came from boosted posts (23,566 paid and 32,450 organic). Engagement was strong, with 7,987 total interactions, 2,211 reactions, 477 comments, and 183 shares.

The post also drove significant traffic, with 5,114 clicks, further demonstrating the community’s deep connection to the initiative.

In the letter, Sami spoke about the sometimes lonely lives of kids with autism – including her own son Nixon – and encouraged Sunny Coast families to invite the child with autism in their class to their son or daughter’s birthday party.

Sami said the response from people with kids who have autism – or adult children on the autism spectrum – has been overwhelming:

“It’s been like a big warm hug from this silent army. It’s truly been remarkable to hear so many stories, and I hope it brings more awareness and even change when it comes to how these kids are treated. We’ve heard so many stories of bullying and kids being ostracised because they are a bit quirky.”

A highlight of the week was Sami’s son Nixon taking to the airwaves to discuss his personal experiences living with autism.

His candidness and charm captivated listeners, with Sami saying “As for Nixon … well, he is just thinking he is the bee’s knees because so many people heard him on the radio.”

The station’s commitment to autism awareness was further exemplified by guest co-hosts like Courtney and 11-year-old Seb from Caloundra State Primary School, who shared their unique perspectives and challenges.

These segments not only illuminated the diverse experiences within the autism community but also underscored the importance of empathy and support.

The initiative received unwavering support from the MIX FM team, with Sami extending her gratitude.

“Thanks to our boss Ben, who came up with the idea, and Cass, our marketing icon who has helped with it all, and our social media team for making everything happen.”

Listeners can revisit these segments on the Todd & Sami podcast, available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. For more information and resources on autism support, visit the 92.7 MIX FM website here.
