The final call: Luke Darcy announces his retirement from AFL media on Triple M Breakfast
This morning on Triple M Breakfast with Rosie, Wil & Daisy, long-time Triple M commentator and Bulldogs great Luke Darcy officially announced his retirement from AFL media after more than 15 years behind the mic.
With a touch of humour, Darcy said he was ready to “break his silence” following weeks of media speculation regarding his future.
Darcy will call his final game for Triple M this Saturday at the 2024 AFL Grand Final.
The team took a trip down memory lane, reminiscing on Darcy’s standout moments on Triple M, including his time on The Hot Breakfast alongside Eddie McGuire.
Reflecting on his dual role as a media commentator and the father of rising Western Bulldogs star Sam Darcy, Luke admitted that balancing both has been “compromised” at times this year.
“I’m ready to break my silence,” Darcy laughed. “On Saturday, that will be the last game I call on Triple M and finishing up on Channel 7 as well. I’m having second thoughts now that I remember how fun that (commentating) is.”
“To still be going to the best stadium in the world, the best game in the world, I just feel grateful. I actually stop for a minute in the carpark and remind myself how lucky (I) am to still be doing it. We’ve had so much fun, it’s such a privilege to be able to do it. Life’s a bit about timing so trying to exit at a time that suits… I will savour every bit of Grand Final Day.
“The game has never been in better shape so a nice time for me to move on.”
While Triple M has announced its all-star commentary line-up for the Grand Final showdown between the Swans and the Lions.
Luke Darcy and Mark Howard will be joined by AFL legends Jason Dunstall and Nathan Brown for special comments and expert analysis throughout the day.
On the boundary, Michael Roberts will deliver real-time insights, while veteran stats man Ash Chua will dig deep into the numbers to define the last Saturday in September.
SCA Head of Sports Content Ewan Giles says “The Grand Final is the pinnacle of the AFL season, and we’re excited to bring fans the best commentary team in the game. Triple M’s coverage will be second to none as Sydney and Brisbane battle for the premiership.”
“With Luke Darcy making his final call, it’s a special moment for all of us at Triple M. His impact on footy broadcasting has been immense, and we’re honoured to have him finish this chapter of his iconic career with us.”
Sad to hear this news – I listen to SD while watching the footy on the tube .. won’t be the same without him
