The end of 40 years for ‘Locco’

Staff Writer

Mike 'Locco' O'Loughlin, the breakfast announcer at 4CA FM in Cairns, is retiring next month after 40 years in the industry.

He told the Cairns Post: "People I've interviewed, from your Mick Jaggers to authors of books like Jeffery Deaver and Lee Child … it's just been great."

Thinking back on his most memorable time at the Cairns station:

"There was a lady, who after one of the many storms we had up here, lost her house and then had to go somewhere else and lost her partner, it was one of the most touching stories. We were able to do a campaign on the air to get her a house again. For me, it was a beautiful, touching moment and a very teary moment."

O'Loughlin started his career in Adelaide in carting.

He is having a career change and will manage a farm in Victoria's Goulburn Valley.

Locco would also be looking on with pride at his son, Angus', growing radio career. He is currently doing breakfast at SAFM in Adelaide.
