Sam McClure returns to 3AW

Sam McClure was today announced as the inaugural host of 3AW’s Wide World of Sports radio program, debuting Wednesday, November 2 at 6.00pm.

McClure will be joined by a rotating roster of footy and sports commentators to be announced in the coming weeks.

Sam began his media career at 3AW as a broadcasting assistant in 2011, before becoming a news reporter and regular contributor to the Sportsday program.

In 2017 he joined radio station SEN as a reporter on the breakfast program. McClure also worked as a football reporter for the 7Network.

Long known as ‘Scoop McClure’, in 2018, he joined The Age newspaper as a sports reporter, and in 2020, he joined the Footy Classified program on the 9Network.

In 2021 he won the AFL Brown Award for the most outstanding football journalist of the year.

Sam said his family exclusively listened to 3AW when he was growing up.

“I grew up with 3AW being the only station my family would listen to. When I first started working there I was a teenager buying coffees for hosts at outside broadcasts. To be back, in my 30s, hosting Wide World of Sports is very special,” said McClure.

Stephen Beers, 3AW Station Manager, said: “We are excited to have Sam join us back at 3AW where his career started as we look forward to a new era of sports coverage with Wide World of Sports.

“We also want to thank Gerard Healy for his 30-year contribution as co-host of Sportsday.”

The launch will usher in a new era in sports with local versions of the Wide World of Sports radio program airing nationally across 2GB3AW4BC and 6PR

Ash EarnshawNine’s Director of Sales, Total Audio, said: “The extension of the Wide World of Sports superbrand offers an exciting opportunity for marketers to reach this highly targeted and engaged demographic of listeners across the country.

“It will be strengthened by the legendary Wide World of Sports television properties and allows our team to sell TV and audio together.”

Mark Levy will continue to host the program on 2GB while Peter Psaltis remains as host in Brisbane. A host for Perth will be announced soon.
