Radio: “the most intimate of media”

Staff Writer

New CRA Board Chairman Adam Lang, along with CRA CEO Joan Warner welcomed Government, Opposition and Independent MP’s and Senators to Parliament House last week.

It was an opportunity for not only Commercial Radio Australia board members but Network CEO’s and owners from Metro and Regional Markets to press the flesh in Canberra.

The Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull talked extensively of his love of radio and how it was part of his family history.  He said “he loved radio and it was the most intimate of media”.

Malcolm also talked about how the Government was trying to reduce and simplify the burden of some regulatory reporting for the industry.

3AW’s Neil Mitchell was the MC for the presentation and he shared stories of how former Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett actually changed Government policy after listening to talk back callers on Neil’s show.  Neil explained “that radio was a way for politicians to connect with the electorate”.

The recently launched Radio It’s a Love Thing industry brand campaign was highlighted, showing the importance of local and live radio in communities, particularly during emergencies.

It was the first Commercial Industry social occasion in Canberra since DAB+ launched in 2011.
