Peter Lewis on the ABC Board

Staff Writer

It has been on the cards for a while now and finally it’s confirmed.

Peter Lewis has been appointed to the ABC Board as a non-executive director for the next five years.

Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull announcing his appointment said he will be "a valuable addition to the ABC Board, bringing with him extensive and deep industry knowledge and experience."

Peter was held many financial roles with a number of media groups, including Seven West Media, Seven and Ten Networks. This year he had a very short run as CFO with Southern Cross Austereo before resigning from the role.

Peter also conducted efficiency review of ABC and SBS.

Both the Friends of the ABC and the union for ABC staffers have not reacted positively to the move.

Community and Public Sector Union President Michael Tull said: “Peter Lewis has just completed a controversial, and secret, review of the ABC which could lead to significant cuts and yet he is joining the ABC’s Board just as it is considering those recommendations. “

“This appointment also seriously risks undermining the independence of the ABC Board which has a statutory obligation to be independent of the Government and uphold the ABC Charter.”

“This is a hostile and politically-motivated appointment that undermines the independence of the ABC Board.  The Abbott Government has hand-picked a fox to put in the ABC hen house. Not content with getting Peter Lewis to plan the ABC cuts, the Government has put him on the Board to finish the job.”
