Patricia Karvelas expects an adjustment period for listeners on RN Breakfast

ABC Radio National’s newest breakfast host, Patricia Karvelas, hosted her first show in the role yesterday and is determined to make the gig her own, but expects “a period of grief,” for listeners.

PK recently spoke with The Guardian about her new role on the RN Breakfast Show and is expecting a little turbulence as she works to “steady the ship” after becoming the new captain of ABC RN breakfast.

“That’s my first project: to sort of steady the ship. When you lose a host there is a period of grief and adjustment that I’m very prepared for. Because I’ve done it before, I went through it when Waleed Aly moved on [from RN Drive] – the listeners were very attached to him,” said Karvelas.

Karvelas replaced her friend and podcast partner Fran Kelly, after Fran reluctantly left the breakfast role she had been in for 17 years to focus on the coming election and political podcast, The Party Room.

Motivated and dedicated, Karvelas is committed to maintaining the energy of ABC RN Breakfast and covering all big stories nationally, despite the change of host and location, as RN Breakfast will now be broadcast from Melbourne.

“RN Breakfast will continue to be the home of big conversations, all of the big political interviews, arts, culture, sport,” said Karvelas.

“It’s a national show, we’ll be covering everything – The Kimberley, The Northern Territory, WA, but I’ll be broadcasting from Melbourne.”

PK was featured in an ABC Radio National Twitter post introducing herself and showing viewers the studio where the show will now be broadcast from with the backing track of George Michaels hit song, Faith.
