Number 1 again: 2GB’s Ray Hadley to leave on a winning note

A day out from his last on-air shift, 2GB Mornings host Ray Hadley will leave on a winning note, regaining the #1 spot in the final radio ratings survey for 2024.
The retiring talkback legend – who was toppled by WSFM’s Ugly Phil O’Neill last month – enjoyed a 2.5% gain in GfK Survey 8 to end the year with a 13.7 share, just ahead of Smooth FM.
Hadley told his listeners this morning “It means we’ve won 161 out of 162 (surveys) and that’s how I’ll finish my career – as a winner.”
Ben Fordham reclaimed his crown as Sydney’s #1 Breakfast show (+2.8 to 15.1), with KIIS duo Kyle & Jackie O closing out the year in second place (+0.4 to 13.5).
For Nine Radio’s Head of Content Greg Byrnes it’s a fitting way to wrap up 2024.
“We finish the year like we started, with the clear Number One Breakfast and Morning shows in Sydney and Melbourne.”
“The market has never been tougher in Sydney but 2GB has recorded big audience increases right across the day and is the clear number one on weekdays.”

Well done Ray, a great career – and great to hear that MG may be joining 2GB next year. I’d love to hear him doing the breakfast shift when Ben is on holidays – now that there’s a vacancy with Mark Levy moving to mornings

Mark Geyer doing talkback would actually be pretty interesting. We should get more sportspeople branching out into other forms of radio so they’re not just restricted to FM music shows. They tend to have a lot of stories and opinions so I think it would be worth a shot.
The sycophancy around Ray is off-putting. Most people in the industry don’t like him but have to play the game. I’ll be glad when this whole era of media boors are put to pasture.
@Peter, MG has a fairly intelligent brain in there. He was of course the larrikin at triple M. But some of the topics he’s across and articulate about I think talkback would be something he could grow quite well into. Plus he’s a proud Sydneysider which would help.
Hadley was the last of the Talkback Kings of Sydney. Regardless if if you think he was right or wrong, the fact of the matter is that he always had the bottle to make the statements he made.
He didn’t shy back from talking about topics that were off limits, such as Paedos and other low life criminals, or calling out Politicians for their ineptness.
Lots of people in Macquarie St will sleep easier tonight. John Howard nailed it when he said that a strong democracy needs a strong media. Media today in generally has been downgraded to the extent that Kyle and Jackie O and their repugnant dribble is classed as ‘Broadcasting’.
As for Levy, I can only hope that for the sake of us all, that he and Fordham work to run the narative in Sydney, calling out B.S. Fordham has done it a little, but I dont know if he has really got the traction. Maybe with both Levy and Fordham, they can do something.
I note in comments about Mark Geyer, I do want to add another to the discussion for consideration being Merrick Watts. I appreciated his work last year, and would like to hear some more of him – but we need strong opinions. Whether Left or Right, strong OPINIONS are required on talkback radio to shape and allow discussions in our diverse society.
