Ned and Josh document Cyclone Alfred’s path as they podcast from the Goldy
Canberra duo Ned and Josh have found themselves in an unexpected situation, podcasting from the Gold Coast as Cyclone Alfred approaches.
What was supposed to be a quick trip to see Green Day live took a turn mid-air when they learned the concert had been cancelled. Now, with their plans scrapped, their recording gear in tow and the airport closed, they’ve shifted gears to documenting the experience as it unfolds.
At the time of publication, the cyclone hadn’t made landfall, and Surfers Paradise remained busy with tourists.
The boys say whilst there’s no panic, there’s a definite undercurrent of seriousness in the air, with a clear sense of anticipation and people displaying a quiet respect for the potential impact of the storm.
With their years of radio experience, the duo has stepped into an unexpected role as on-the-ground correspondents, jumping into live interviews across the country over the last 24 hours.
Their podcast is being recorded as close to posting as possible, giving listeners a real-time glimpse into the evolving situation. The boys have spent time working and living on the Gold Coast previously, so they are acutely aware of how tough the residents there are, and how seriously they will be taking their preparations.
“The iconic good humour is there from residents, but it’s clearly a very real situation,” says Josh.
“The last 24 hours have felt a little like the early days of COVID. Going to the supermarket and seeing everyone stocking up on supplies,” added Ned.
“This is such a rare event for south-east Queensland, and people seem to have a very solid view that everyone is in this together over the next few days,” Josh reflected.
For now, Ned and Josh are staying safe, keeping informed, and continuing to share what’s happening as the situation develops.
Like so many others on the Gold Coast, they’re waiting to see exactly what Cyclone Alfred brings next.
Stay safe boys!
These guys are second maybe to only Jase and Lauren for a decent pivot out of something crappy.
