Music to chill out to: Warringa Park students release new Radio On album
Recently we brought you the story of Ben Butcher, the Melbourne music teacher helping special needs students to write and produce their own original songs through the Radio On project at Warringa Park School.
Each year, the recordings are made into an album which is available for airplay, and Ben and his students do their own little promo tour, visiting local community radio stations.
Now, Radio On has launched its latest album, called In The Calm, We See Ourselves.
It’s a chillout collection of music, inspired by the quieter works of Brian Eno, Pharoah Sanders and Floating Points, and The KLF. The students played instruments and used their voices to record sounds that made them feel happy and relaxed.
Many students at Warringa Park School have complex physical, social and cognitive needs and are supported to help them develop and express themselves.
Through Radio On project, students are motivated to perform at the best of their abilities, to produce work that successfully reflects their expressions back to themselves, and to a wider audience.
The singles Time To Relax and the Midnight Oil cover of Beds Are Burning have already been released, with more songs to be featured once the school holidays are over.
