After a solid rise in the first book of the year, the Mix team of Kristen and Nige continue to dominate the Breakfast timeslot with a 22.8 share (-3.7), ahead of ABC Canberra (+0.7 to 15.3).

With a 6.1 rise in share, Radio National ‘s new breakfast host Sally Sara leapfrogged Hit’s Rod & Gabi to now sit third place in Breakfast (-1.6 to 11.7).

Across the talk stations, Radio National picked up older listeners who dropped away from the other talk stations 666 ABC Canberra, 2CC and NewsRadio.

2CC’s breakfast presenter Stephen Cenatiempo slipped a little, but Mark Levy’s new morning show fell most, down 3.5 share points this survey. 666 ABC Radio Canberra, the ABC’s local station gained in across its workday timeslots, with afternoons and drive gaining most, while evenings and weekends fell.

2CA’s classic hits music format lifted its over 65 audience, but dropped off some 40-64 listeners to slip fractionally, losing listeners in drive but steady in other shifts.

Mix lost younger listeners to sister station Hit, swapping the share of 10-17 year old listeners almost excxatly between the two stations. Triple j lost 18-39 listeners, to drop 1.3 points overall.

Mix breakfast remaining dominant and Hit breakfast continuing its steady decline to now 4th place. Hit Canberra are in shambles.

This is the lowest breakfast result for Hit 104.7 in five years. The last time it was this low was during COVID. To find a number this low without a pandemic, you’d have to go back to late 2018.

The headline internally should be that the Hit breakfast show is trailing their sister station by 11.1 points. But the other worrying number surely must be that Hit is trailing Mix in 18-39s by 9.2. That’s a huge lead in that demo for a station not even targeting that audience. Mix is a powerhouse.

I wonder if Hit are standing by their decision to dump Ned & Josh after this performance. It seems installing two hosts aged well over the target demo isn’t serving them well.

A certain user here has previously commented that radio ratings don’t really ever change in the Sydney radio market, although I’d suggest it’s still positively vibrant compared to Canberra! At least the order of our top stations has occasionally bounced around (especially post-2020), unlike the national capital where for some years now, it’s been Mix 106.3 with a solid #1 and the rest a bit behind.

I suppose Hit 104.7 is currently in a rebuilding phase and full recovery may take a year or two for them, but what’s with 2CA and 2CC? The latter station essentially being positioned as “2GB Canberra” (with local brekky/drive, and on-air branding elements very reminiscent of a former 2UE) would seem to be at odds with what the market actually wants!

Like I get that Canberra is very much an ABC city on the basis of its unique demography, but you’d think commercial radio in a market of some 400-500k people might be a bit more interesting/competitive than it currently is!

The wound in Hit 104.7 Breakfast is very much self-inflicted

I have observed over time that unlike other major markets our ABC is a leader in spoken word programs in Canberra compared to the other major capital markets.

That includes RN, ABC Metro and ABC News.

Each station either rates the same as in ABC News and 2CC or ABC Metro or RN rate higher than 2CC.

In other markets,a station like 2CC would rate higher than any ABC station. Examples 2CC equivalents such as 2GB and 3AW rate higher than their ABC counterpart.

This proves that there is no one size fits all for major metro markets.

This applies to commercial and ABC.

To illustrate while the Mix or KIIS branded stations rate well in Sydney, they are a flop in Melbourne.

Agains shows that the markets are not the one size fits all.

Does ARN or SCA have any influence over amplifyCBR? Surely SCA can’t be happy for its Hit brand to be trailing so badly. amplifyCBR might be able to say they’re #1 and #2 in the market, but they basically have a duopoly with nearly a 10 point difference between their stations, and Hit Breakfast is fourth!

@PJC It doesn’t seem like SCA have a say. They need to intervene and take control of their brand. That breakfast show is not on brand for Hit.
