Reporter

The champagne corks are popping in the West this week, with 6iX Announcer Mike Parry celebrating a remarkable 40 years in radio.

A true local who was born in Subiaco and has lived in Perth his whole life, Mike started his radio journey in 1984, carting at 6KY before moving onto an on air role as Afternoons host at 6AM Northam.

In 1988, it was back to 6KY mid dawns and weekend days until 1995, where he took on the job as MD and on air presenter at 6MM Mandurah.

He oversaw the launch of 97.3 Coast FM in 1996, and was PD from 1997 until 1999.

Stints at stations including 96FM, REDFM and WAFM would follow, before Mike landed at 6iX in 2016.

Mike’s highlights include starting Coast FM 97.3 from ground up and hiring announcers for the brand new station, meeting Barry Humphries at 96FM and also meeting Heath Ledger while he was promoting a new movie .

Mike says he’s truly proud to see a lot young announcers he hired for their first job out of radio school now enjoying great jobs at major cap city stations.

6iX Program Director Brad Pottinger led the tributes:

“Congratulations to the ageless Mike Parry.”

“Mike must have been in his early teens when starting his career. An unbelievable achievement for someone to last that long in an industry like ours.”

“What a legend, congrats Mike.”

Mike was my boss at Red FM in Perth back in 07-08′! I was a Creative Writer at the time, and honestly he was nothing but encouraging and understanding when you went through the odd creative drought. When I saw 40yrs, I thought, this cannot be the same Mike! Someone interview him on his anti-aging secrets! Congrats Mike, and hopefully our paths cross again
