Media authority boss grilled during Senate hearing over Kyle & Jackie O content
The Australian Communications and Media Authority has been grilled in federal parliament over The Kyle and Jackie O Show, amid claims of misogynistic and racist content.
Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young believes the material has blatantly breached decency standards.
During a Senate hearing last night, Senator Hanson-Young quizzed the media regulator boss as to why no investigation has been launched into the KIIS FM show.
Handing out pieces of paper with comments made during the program, Senator Hanson-Young asked ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin whether she would be able to read them out.
Ms O’Loughlin replied that she would “prefer not to,” on the basis that she didn’t think they were appropriate for parliamentary language.
Hanson-Young replied “I understand why you don’t want to read these comments out, because they are vulgar, aren’t they? Do you think they would be appropriate for broadcast radio between the hours of 6am and 10 am?”
The hearing was told the regulator has received 59 complaints about the show since July, but that under the co-regulatory system, complaints are dealt with by the licence holder in the first instance.
They waited this long for an inquest?
If they were really worried they wouldn’t waited nearly 25 years to do something about it?
About time someone tried to hold ACMA to account for their lack of interest in regulating such disgusting content.
Section 2.4 of the Commercial Radio Code of Practice states:-
“A Licensee must not broadcast a feature Program which has an explicit sexual
theme as its core component unless it is broadcast between 7.00pm and
6.00am and an appropriate warning is made prior to commencement of the
Program and at hourly intervals during broadcast of the Program.”
How K&J’s inappropriate content is broadcast outside of the hours mentioned above (worse of all, when people are waking up and driving their children to school) is beyond me. It makes you wonder about double standards and favoritism from ACMA.
About time!
The Kyle and Jackie O show are just a reflection of the world we live in! Sad isn’t?
Long overdue.
I’m talking about shining a light on ACMA and the “content” being broadcast on breakfast radio.
