Legends of Australian radio and audio share their knowledge

It was a pretty cool moment. In fact, it still stands out as one of the great highlights of Matt Nikolic’s career.

Nikolic, the man credited with creating the ‘sound’ of Melbourne’s Fox FM and one of the most respected radio imaging producers in the biz, remembers one particular summer jingle that was a long time in the making, and the great sense of anticipation it generated around the office.

“It was quite detailed,” says Nikolic. “I remember the boss got on the PA just before it went to air and told everyone to down tools and turn up the radio. We played this minute-long mix of it to begin with.”

“I could hear applause all around the office when it happened.”

Nikolic (main photo) – a previous winner in the Radio Today Podcast Awards – is sharing his story and production tips here with fellow audio pro and former Radio Today writer Daryl Missen (pictured above) as part of a series called Radio Promo Tips.

Missen says back in 2010 – long before the impact of social media – he noticed the big guns of Australia’s audio and radio production industry weren’t talking together and sharing their collective knowledge to help young aspiring audio producers. At least, not as well as they could have been.

“Learning from each other was the goal, so I set about contacting my colleagues and interviewing them.”

Radio Promo Tips was the result, featuring interviews with respected industry figures including Nigel Haines, John Rowland, David Konsky, Brendan ‘BT’ Tacey, Matt Bauer and Matty Dower.

Missen says each and every one of these people has crafted his own career in some inspiring way.

They open up about their careers as a whole. Who has influenced them? Why do they love their job? And perhaps most importantly, what do they do when they’re stuck for ideas?

“Obviously, times have changed and the sharing of skills and knowledge is much more forthcoming now,” says Missen.

“But here are some absolute legends of my radio and audio industry that I’m chuffed to have been supported by and on the journey with.”
