Lawrence Mooney throws down the ratings gauntlet to Kyle & Jackie O

Former Assistant Editor

Newly installed Triple M Sydney Breakfast host Lawrence ‘Moonman’ Mooney has warned his new competitors that he’s out for the top spot in the market this year.

Mooney’s new show ‘Moonman In The Morning’ – with Jess Eva, Gus Worland and Chris ‘Pagey’ Page in tow – debuted last Tuesday.

With Matty Johns at the helm, previous show The Grill Team had spent the last few years rating between 4-6%, but Mooney is confident he can take the show to #1, a position currently occupied by KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O.

“When I joined the Brisbane breakfast team it was 9.2 per cent (market share) and I left Brisbane on 14.1 per cent,” he told Daily Telegraph.

“I love the numbers, I get very involved in ratings … I want to go to No. 1 and I think there’s room for this show to grow.

“If you’re not going to get involved with the ratings then you can’t celebrate.

“And who doesn’t want to win?”

Mooney is aware that it might take Sydney listeners time to adjust to the comedy-driven format.

“If you want something fresh and you’ve been listening to the same station for 10 years, give a new show a crack.”

He also refused to commit to relocating to Sydney, at least for the time being.

“For the next five weeks I’m in Sydney and I’ll be spending a lot of time up here.

“We are absolutely looking to move here but it’s all dependent on how the show goes in the first place … If we tank, I’m gone and that’s radio.”

Mick Molloy hasn’t worked on drive in Sydney what would make SCA think Mooney from Melbourne will work on breakfast in Sydney ?

I like Mooney but he should stick with his own style stop trying to be a Kyle. And Lawrence Mooney rated 10’s and 11’s in Breakfast here. The 14 share was a rogue one off. Good luck to him in Sydney that’s a tough beast to crack many talented broadcasters have come unstuck down there.

He’s doing the show from Melbourne with Ed and Ash and Hughesy.

So Moon Man is 100% gunning for that number one spot, be neither he or MMM are sure he should move to Sydney yet? If SCA doesn’t want to commit to its breakfast shows, why should listeners?

Shots fired. Looks like Mooney just made his first big mistake. The last one to call out Kyle was Em Rusciano.

Mooney broadcasting from Melbourne can’t understand why. It’s not as if Sydney is Ballarat it’s a nice city.

Phil, because Mick was on drive in Sydney before/ Mooney is a national profile on TV. You won’t believe this but many TVs in Sydney. The Melbourne/Sydney rivalry went out the window about when bumper stickers died and footy stars lived in their team suburb unless of course you remind people where you are all the time. Tom, saying he’d like to beat Kyle doesn’t make him Kyle. Howard, if you’ve been employed in the last 15 years you’d know there are probationary periods and i would want to know the show, team, town felt right before I bought a joint and I would have that in my contract. Any more community radio DJs want to ask something inane ?

Matty Johns was good because he offered something a little different. He is a sportsman, with a long tv career, is credible, and has a flair for telling a yarn. Moonman is just another comedian trying to launch just another radio career in the big smoke. Won’t last. He should stick to short slots and impersonations, which he is good at, or the long form in the little smoke.

Chris – you sound like a program director thats had wide success with your analysis of the Sydney market and what works and what doesn’t. Would love your inner thoughts about who you thinks would work then. To me it sounds like a bloke that’s having a crack at something Sydney hasn’t had for a while and he’s put his balls on the line to do it. To me ya better off having a crack then being a keyboard warrior pretending to be a program director in a small dark room, while bidding on second hand white goods on eBay to flip for a profit.

Also re – his comments, how have we all become such a soft society?? Loosen up and enjoy a bit of friendly banter! What? Anyone with a bit of spark is going to fail?? Let’s get excited that something different is hitting the airwaves good, bad or indifferent. Enjoy the craft of broadcast for once… rather then bitching about what won’t make it work. Either that or put the keyboards down and do some anti negativity mediation

I like Lawrence Mooney, I bought two tickets to his show last year but couldn’t be bothered going, which is a True Mooney supporter I
reckon! Lawrence some Sydney advice, because your failing already, if your going to do a show in Sydney you have to be here it’s just always been that way, until Today FM tried and failed, and Today was a Sydney institution for years, now they can’t get over a 5 at breakfast. Kyle and Jackie O are so successful here because they get Sydney and its people and are out on the roads, ringing us and doing random stuff anywhere anytime and that’s what we like best. You need to live here to get the feel of the show, have your finger on the pulse and see and hear the impact your having with listeners and be across our media and your media campaigns. On a positive note, I’m happy you’ve got your own show your hilarious and it’s a good time to be coming, we need some comedy and you suit the Sydney market. Come to Sydney Mooney and fast! Because to be honest no one even knows your on air yet I only found out reading this article.

Lover of Radio, lucky for me I am a listener not a director. I am allowed to choose who I will listen to, I chose the previous grill team for about five years every day and will give Mooney a miss. I am also not a keyboard warrior, just a bloke with a harmless comment. I listen to the radio to relax and maybe have a laugh. Don’t be so defensive about your programme, I am sure some people will still tune in, just not me. Also, in my opinion, Chris Page is one of the sharpest personalities on radio these days, hope he moves on quickly.

Jason, are you aware Kyle isn’t in Sydney 50% of the time?

Throws your advice out the window.

Chris, was Kyle in LA or Footscray? Guess the audience numbers will ultimately decide what works in Sydney and what doesn’t.

The last person to lay down the gauntlet to Kyle and Jackie was Em Rusciano. Triple M will have a challenging year without Matty Johns.

Mooney wrong call doing show from Melbourne. Remember Kyle Sanderlands did his show out of LA for a few months after he had had more than 15 years of success in Sydney first. You’ve got to crawl before you can walk.
