James Valentine & Fran Kelly recognised in King’s Birthday Honours List

The late James Valentine is among the prominent radio personalities to be recognised in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours List.

The beloved ABC broadcaster – who passed away in April – was posthumously appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the media as a radio presenter and television host, as well as contributions to music and children’s literature.

Fellow veteran broadcaster Fran Kelly was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to broadcast journalism, social justice, equality, and LGBTQIA+ advocacy.’

Kelly – presenter of the ABC’s Radio National Hour – hosted RN Breakfast for 17 years.

Another five former ABC staff members were been recognised in this year’s honours list, including award-winning TV presenter, news correspondent and filmmaker Craig Leeson – who began his media journey at ABC Radio in Hobart.

Others include Timothy Entwisle AO, Bronwyn Fagan AM, Helen Gregory OAM and Paul Griffiths OAM.

Former 2DayFM Breakfast radio host and high-profile TV presenter Rove McManus was made a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to broadcast media, entertainment and the community.

Radio veteran Geoff King was recognised for his service to broadcast media, particularly Melbourne community radio station 3RRR.

Richard Watts (OAM) was recognised for his service to the arts as a journalist, and as a long-serving presenter at 3RRR.

Stephen O’Doherty (OAM) was recognised for his leadership roles across various media organisations, including his work with Christian Media & Arts Australia and the Community Broadcasting Sector Roundtable.

Cassandra Wilkinson (OAM) was acknowledged for her role as the former president and co-founder of Sydney’s FBi Radio, and her previous tenure as Senior Vice President of the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA).

Paul Beech (OAM) was recognised for his service to broadcasting through Harvey Community Radio (96.5fm) in Western Australia.

Dr Anh Nguyen (OAM) was honoured for his service to the community through his work with World Radio (6EBA-FM 95.3) in Perth.

The late Graydon Henning (OAM) was posthumously recognised for his service to the community and his contributions at Armidale Community Radio (2ARM FM92.1).

Walter Tyson (OAM): Recognised for his dedicated service to broadcasting at 2 Triple B FM.
