Ita Buttrose to step down as ABC Chair next March
Ita Buttrose will not be seeking reappointment as Chair of the ABC, deciding to depart following the competition of her current term ending in March next year.
Communications Minister Michelle Rowland broke the news today, praising Ms Buttrose for her dedication and persistence, especially during challenging times.
“Ms Buttrose is a formidable corporate leader who has served with distinction, speaking truth to power and upholding governance standards to protect independent public broadcasting,” Rowland said.
“She navigated the public broadcaster through a challenging period that included strident political criticism, the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing transformation of the ABC so it can remain an essential part of Australian life in the digital age.”

Now 81, Ms Buttrose has served as the Chair of the ABC since 2019.
She was appointed following a period of chaos at the ABC that saw her predecessor Justin Milne resign following a unanimous motion by staff calling him to step down.
In a statement, Ms Buttrose said she has enjoyed her time in the role for many reasons, and it’s”business as usual” until she says goodbye.
“There have been many memories, some challenges, and I have relished the opportunity to play a role in the ABC’s history,” Ms Buttrose said.
“Our 90th celebrations last year remain a high point for me but there are many moments I will always remember.”
“Among those are the many interactions with both ABC staff and our audiences across the country.”
“There is still work to be done between now and March next year. Until then, it is business as usual.”
The term officially ends on March 6 2024, and a new Chair is expected to be announced prior to the term completion.
This is good news because the ABC was becoming too right wing
I don’t my tax dollars being spent humanising Liberal politicians
… “becoming too right wing”? yep, as evidenced by all those 4 Corners hatchet jobs on those well-known left-wingers like Pell, Porter, Morrison and Murdoch – the last one getting a finding from the ACMA that the ABC news department had “breached accuracy and fair and honest dealing requirements of its Code of Practice” …
