‘I’m A Celebrity…’ producer speaks with Hit106.9’s Nick, Jess & Simon about Bernard Tomic’s departure

Bernard Tomic’s shock exit from I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here has been a buzz topic in the media this week, and Hit106.9 Breakfast team recently spoke to the show’s producer to get the inside information on what really happened.

Producer Alex Mavroidakis called in live from the South African jungle to chat with Nick, Jess and Simon about his experience trying to keep the maligned Aussie tennis star from becoming the first person to willingly depart the show.

“The hardest thing with I’m A Celeb is convincing them to do it in the first place, most of them are fine because they’ve mentally prepared for it and physically prepared for it, and they know it’s going to be hard,” said Mavroidakis.

“I think some of them turn up and think it’s going to be a holiday… but it is real, it’s the realest reality show i’ve ever worked on.”

When pressed on Tomic’s departure. Mavroidakis admitted that the tennis pro wasn’t mentally prepared for the rigors of the show.

“Look he didn’t come in the right head space, I don’t think there’s any question about that.”

“He composed a text message to me three days before he arrived saying he was going to pull out.”

“We heard from his representation and his parents that they all were advising him to stay,” said Mavroidakis of Tomic’s departure.

“I gave him that information and said I think it’s not going to be good for you if you leave…I think he’s going to be walking into a wall of criticism, I feel sorry for the bloke and obviously I wish him well.”

Mavroidakis also answered several questions about the show’s inner workings and whether previous contestants had come close to quitting.

Nick, Jess and Simon can be heard from 6am – 9am weekdays on Newcastle’s Hit106.9 Breakfast.
