Marty Haynes from I98 FM in Wollongong has been named a joint winner of the 2012 Illawarra Person of the Year award.

His co-winner was Chris Beaven, who heads up KidzWish, an Illawarra charity. Marty has been awarded the prize for his work raising money for needy children across the Illawarra; between them raising $10 million dollars in the past decade, with Marty raising $1 million in 2012 alone.

In 2005, he started a truck and motorbike convoy for kids, and raised $20,000. This followed on from his fund-raising efforts at FM104.7 in Canberra which started with a young listener called Ryan who phoned into Marty's Breakfast show.

"This boy kept ringing me on air – he was such a character, a beautiful kid, I got to know his mum and dad. Once or twice a week we would do stuff, take him for a ride in my rally car or take him out for dinner."; Marty told the Illawarra Mercury.

The 'Convoy for Kids' in the Illawarra is the biggest in Australia. Last months event attracted 764 trucks, 926 motorbikes and 100,000 spectators as it headed from the northern suburbs to the south down to Albion Park.

The award for Marty is a fantastic recognition of the excellent charity work that he has consistently done for years across both I98 FM in Wollongong and FM104.7 in Canberra.

He's come a long way since his days as a Channel Nine camera man!
