Hey hey. We’re counting down to Thursday

GfK Survey 2 is almost upon us, but don’t worry, there’s still plenty of time to get your popcorn supplies sorted – the results don’t come out until Thursday this week.

In February, GfK advised of an updated survey schedule – with Metro Survey 2 shifted from tomorrow, April 29th, to May 1st.

On the latest ep of the Game Changers Radio: Melbourne Radio Wars podcast, experienced content and music strategist Irene Hulme predicts we’ll see a new #1 show this week, with Nova’s Jase & Lauren reclaiming the top spot in FM brekky, The Christian O’Connell Show second and Fifi Fev & Nick third.

In terms of share, Hulme believes Kyle & Jackie O will be in the fives, as a result of converting the cume they’ve generated over the past month.

Co-host and creative coach Wade Kingsley expects the Melbourne radio landscape to remain much the same, with Christian O’Connell still leading the FMs in brekky, ahead of Jase & Lauren, then Fifi Fev & Nick.

As for how Kyle & Jackie O will fare this survey, Kingsley says “I think the thing we’ll all be looking for – the first number where your eyes go on the sheet – I think it’s going to be the Kyle and Jack cume, and I think it’s going to inch up just a little bit once again.”

While looking at the Sydney radio landscape, former SCA content boss Craig Bruce says another number which will be of particular interest will be 2Day FM’s 18 to 34 female cume, given the station’s recent format change – its biggest on-air overhaul in decades.

Unfortunately 2DayFm is dead already…only proper rebranding is the key…

This is so annoying because so people were expecting to see results this morning

It is no wonder radio is dying when people
don’t even know what day the ratings are coming out

Anybody who thinks a rebrand will save any business is a fool. You lose good will attached the old brand whilst trying to bed something in no one knows or cares about.

Step 1 should be making content that people will want to consume. everything else comes secondary after that.

One would hope 2DayFM’s ratings do improve with the recently launched format, but I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they’re struggling to outrate 2UE by the end of 2025.

Yes, content is key but sometimes you need to go as far as doing a total reset right up to the station name for long-term growth: 95.3 and 106.5 were near the bottom of the Sydney ratings about 15 years ago, and I strongly doubt would’ve been able to become the successful Top 2 FM stations they are today without their complete brand reinventions in 2012 and 2014 respectively.

Now don’t get me wrong, there’s certainly market value with brand heritage but let’s be realistic here: 104.1 (unlike say, 101.7 or AM) isn’t really the kind of station listened to by a demographic likely to hold traditions of many decades near and dear to their hearts! In addition, when was the last time you heard someone reminisce about Mix 106.5 or the various pre-Smooth incarnations of 95.3?
