4CA launches weekly current affairs show hosted by former LNP politician Gavin King

Former Editor & Content Director

Former journalist and Queensland state politician, Gavin King, has a new radio show on Grant Broadcasters’ 4CA in Cairns.

The King Review will air at midday on Fridays and 10am on Sundays, and will “dig deep into a wide variety of topics and issues facing the region and ask the tough questions of a range of guests, including local, statewide and national heavy hitters in business, politics and the community”, Grant Broadcasters said.

The show had a six-week run in October last year in the lead-up to the Queensland state election.

King is a former News Corp journalist, who covered politics and business for The Cairns Post, Sunday Mail, and Centralian Advocate. He then worked in senior editorial leadership before making the leap into state politics in 2011.

In the lead up to the 2012 election, he received widespread backlash for a column about women’s role and responsibility in sexual violence when alcohol is involved.

“If a woman drinks to excess during a night out on the town, is she partly to blame for being raped or assaulted? As uncomfortable and difficult as this question is, the answer surely is yes,” he said, in an article which no longer appears to be online.

He subsequently apologised, and in 2012, he became the first conservative politician to win the state seat of Cairns. He then became assistant minister for tourism.

In 2015, he suffered a 17.3% swing against him on a two-party preferred basis, and lost the seat to Labor’s Rob Pyne.

King said he’s now excited to be hosting this unique, no holds barred current affairs show.

“In this age of uncertainty, fake news and information overload, it’s more important than ever for the media to provide unbiased, hard-hitting and insightful news and views to the community. Grant Broadcasters has a clear commitment to regional journalism so it’s an absolute honour to be part of the station’s great local line-up,” he said.

“I have always loved the medium of radio – it’s a direct, unfiltered connection into people’s daily lives and it’s a privilege to be working with the awesome 4CA team on the new show.”

Grant Broadcasters’ Cairns general manager, Paul Woodhouse, added: ““At 4CA we’re very proud of our role of informing and connecting the community and Gavin’s new show will only strengthen that.”
