Are Hamish & Andy really ready for radio retirement?

Staff Writer

In a matter of days, Hamish and Andy will bid farewell to radio and the Hit Network. Maybe for the last time.

How long their ‘radio retirement’ may last is anyone’s guess. But given their enduring popularity and influence, it’s appropriate that they’re the subject of a special episode of Game Changers: Radio podcast with Craig Bruce.

At their peak, more than 2.5 million people listened to their national Drive show and this episode shares the story of how it all began.

They met at university and stuck together to build the number one media brand and one of the most talked about shows in Australian radio history.

“I remember Hamish saying to me ‘I’ve heard a lot about you’ and I said ‘really’?  And he said ‘nuh, nothing at all’. And I said ‘great’.  And we went across to the pub and that was the start of getting to know each other.”

It’s a story of dedication and a determination to ‘make it work’, even though knew how raw and inexperienced they were at the start.

“So from our perspective, here’s this thing we love doing, but we’re also acutely aware that we’re not good at it and we don’t know anything about it and I guess it just made sense for us to get up to speed as fast as possible.

“We have to listen to these people who’ve been on radio for a long time,” says Hamish.
