Fun and sportsmanship as Corey’s Little League kicks off

Corey Oates’ dream of bringing fun back to junior rugby league became a reality yesterday – as Corey’s Little League hit the field for the very first time.

What started as a passion project for the KIIS 97.3 brekky co-host and former Brisbane Broncos star quickly snowballed after Corey put the call out to kids across Brisbane to join him for a fun and relaxed game of footy.

The response was overwhelming, prompting the formation of two brand-new Under 12s teams: the North Side Dino-Knights, coached by former Origin representative and NRL legend Matt Gillett, and the South Side Kanga-Moos, led by Corey himself.

Crowds of cheering parents and fans lined Davies Park as the two teams went head-to-head.

7NEWS Junior Reporter Patty made his debut on the sidelines, providing commentary alongside Channel 7’s Rugby League analyst Trevor Gillmeister.

After a thrilling match, it was the North Side Dino-Knights who walked away victorious, winning 4-3.

However, the day’s biggest triumph was the joy and sportsmanship on display from each young player.

Harrison from Bellbowrie and Rocco from Springfield were awarded the Prime Minister’s Medal for their efforts as the Best and Fairest on field.

Speaking after the game, Corey said “The best part about the day was the kids having fun, and that’s all I wanted. I wanted them all just to have fun.”

“And the best part was that you could see the enjoyment and excitement on their faces.”
