Flume #1 on Hottest 100

Staff Writer

Flume’s Never Be Like You (feat Kai) scored the top spot on triple j’s Hottest 100 countdown yesterday, following 2.2 million votes from listeners.

That’s a record number according to the j’s, up 7.6% on last year. It’s also the fourth consecutive year an Australian artist has taken out #1.

triple j’s MD Richard Kingsmill said: “It’s rare that a song released back in January will end up in the Hottest 100, let alone at the very top, but ‘Never Be Like You’ just kept growing.

“Collaborating with Canadian singer Kai, Flume could have crafted a fairly straight love song. The melody line alone was strong and the lyrics were heartfelt without being clichéd. But by adding that surprising rhythm track with some pretty abrasive percussion, then throwing those swirling synths on top, he produced a song that only got more powerful over repeated listens.”

While Flume claims the victory for the most popular song, triple j certainly scores #1 for its supporting social media rollout around the Hottest 100 – both during the voting period and the throughout the broadcast. It was impressive, to say the least.

Immediately after the #1 reveal, triple j released an infographic (below) and video to keep the conversation going.

Triple j raised $230K for 2016’s Hottest 100 charity partner AIME, helping 10,000 Indigenous kids through high school and into university, training and employment by 2018.
