Fair Work action as news legend Tony Tardio exits 3AW after 30 years

Tony Tardio – one of Australia’s longest-serving and most respected radio newsreaders – has reportedly lodged action with the Fair Work Commission – after being shown the door at Melbourne talk station 3AW.

66 year-old Tardio – a news veteran of more than four decades – has not been heard on-air since December.

According to the Herald Sun (subscription required), Tardio is understood to have been offered a redundancy.

One of Melbourne’s best known news presenters, Tardio read his very first 3AW bulletin back in January, 1996.

Industry colleagues have rallied behind him, with legendary 3AW broadcaster Derryn Hinch telling the Herald Sun “I think that getting rid of Tony Tardio would be crazy.”

Whilst footy commentator Rex Hunt describes Tardio as one of the best people he’s ever worked with.

Tardio’s son Damian also works at the station as both a producer and audio engineer.

This latest news follows the October departure of 3AW News Director Gail Watson after 17 years, with 3AW Football Executive Producer Luca Gonano taking over the newly-created role of Head of News and Sport.

Tony Tardio has been contacted for comment.

Maybe he shouldn’t have been barracking constantly for the Libs on Twitter and on air. Last time I checked, journos really shouldn’t allow their politics to cloud their work, but he tweeted constantly in Victorian politics right through his shift. It’s amazing he’als lasted as long as he has!

Noooooooooooo! Not Tony Italiano! I really enjoyed listening to his voice and newsreading style. Him, David Armstrong and Dennis O’Kane are legends of 3AW. I’m gonna back Tony in his fight to get his job back.

Sorry 3AW you’ve lost me this time. You’ve axed too many of my faves. I’ve retuned all my radios

Come on Tony. Give some youngsters a go. Lately when I hear you reading the news you sound tired and weak and often making mistakes. Good on 3AW for recognising it.

A dumb decision by 3AW management.

Another stupid decision by Radio Liberal who have given no reason that I have seen.
Tony best voice on radio and excellent newsreader. Will miss you Tony.

3AW is loosing listeners, a pity some of the programming isn’t looked at. Others sounding so tired on this station, perhaps Tony could have been considered to host a show

Long overdue, a newsreader should read the news, not give political opinions. I know it’s a Liberal Party propaganda radio station but it’s too much when the newsreader is also a partisan hack. Hopefully Tom Elliott follows soon, his stuttering, coughing & boring stories about himself & his family are painful.

Tony’s an excellent, highly professional, newsreader. But it’s a bit hypocritical for someone who’s so fiercely anti-union to be going to Fair Work.

Listened to one of his news bulletins in December – his usual serious, authoritarian voice – reading a script about an opinion poll showing Albanese being relatively popular compared to his competitors. He ended the report with a pause then added…”unbelievable” before going to next item. I thought at the time, that’s surely it for him.

I can’t believe tht Tony would be shed like that.
He was such an iconic 3AW personality and always so interesting.
Please reconsider this mistake

Good! Absolute partisan hack.

Maybe he should take up bike riding.

I listen to Community radio most of the time. Some of these stations take 3AW news, I found the bias reporting and reading the news on community radio was breaking their licence, for “fair” news reporting.

@Jim: I’m pretty sure there are also “Accuracy and Fairness in News and Current Affairs” clauses in the Commercial Radio Code of Practice, as per the Commercial Radio and Audio CSAs that air on various stations!

Anyway…if the comments are true about editorial content bleeding into Tony Tardio’s bulletins are true (I seldom hear any 3AW news for obvious reasons, so am not in a position to comment), then maybe it would’ve been a good idea for him to leave journalism and instead have a crack at getting a talkback show?

The only time Tony has an opinion at news time is when Jacqui Felgate speaks to him…belittles him when he gives honest common sense answers which don’t suit her. Could it be on her request?

Strange how working colleagues in radio and tv never come out in support of their own isn’t it? Maybe a little afraid of their own position? Weak bunch of opinionated prima Donna’s.

Tony is an excellent radio news reader and a person who was happy to express an honest opinion when asked. People may suggest he was anti Labor for always telling the truth re the VIC Gov poor performance He will be sadly missed

What’s ur problem 3aw? Tony is a true professional – with extensive experience & very popular! Please re-instate him asap!

Tony goes, yet they keep the most insipid of insipid Emily Power. Her voice and content are like nails on a blackboard! And who is Laura?? Filling in over Christmas. Had to turn off. So incredibly abrasive. Talent like Catherine Powell and Emilia Fuller yet we’re forced with the talentless. Come on 3AW…time to lift your game. Please.

The smoothest voice in radio and had a wicked sense of humour, loved him.

Tony was the best newsreader, yes he had opinions which the vast majority of the listeners agree with! 3AW is becoming d bunch of fence sitters. 2GB is so much better, not afraid to speak out on what matters.

Very poor decision again by Nine Radio, far bigger low hanging fruit to cut and save money from 3AW

I hope he’s not being replaced with Eddie (voice drop down at the end of every sentence) Summerfield.
I have to turn the news off when he’s reading it. He needs to go to news reading school!

Curious to know how old that quote from Rex Hunt is, because he’s in no condition to offer a considered opinion these days.

Responding to Matt..Why is it people of your political persuasion have to make it personal? How about just saying after 30 years it was time for a change? Too hard I guess. Me, I’m sorry to see him go, I enjoyed the banter he had with others.

Shocked to hear the sad news that Tony Tardio has been ‘let go’ (how lame is that term )
Such a well respected and veteran announcer with a voice like liquid gold . Lost me as a listener now also . Shame 3AW.

To be fair, he is 66 and he’s had a good run How long did he think he’d be there for !?
As for Tom Elliott, i’ve lost count how many times he says ‘i agree with you’ during his time slot

How nice it’s been to have such a breath of fresh air with various presenters replacing the usual negative Nellie presenter in the afternoon drive show whilst she’s been on holidays … if anyone should have been axed perhaps it could have been her. Time to switch off again come 3pm – 6pm now.

Explanation required ….
So he expressed his opinions ! … we new what he thought… who cares we all have opinions and are free to express them … the only reason I listen to3AW is because it allows all opinions .. if this is over him expressing opinions I will be turning off !!!!!!

If Tony Tardio got the flick for biased political comment, Mark Riley on 7 should be escorted out for his love affair with Albo… he took the home invitation and the 7 viewers continue to pay for it…

…”a Liberal Party propaganda radio station”??? Give us a break!
If you want propaganda, tune in to ABC 774 anytime – or the 7:30 report – for wall-to-wall Labor bias.

There are a couple of others who should have gone before Tony.
3AW a home for old footy players and couch potatoes.

The station is just so tired.
Needs some competition

So many good podcast elsewhere now.
