Beyond the Bars: Iconic prison radio show celebrates 25 years on air

Reporter

This week marks a unique milestone for a radio broadcast that gives a voice to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander inmates serving time in Victorian prisons.

It’s now 25 years since Melbourne community station 3CR began its Beyond the Bars prison broadcasts.

For NAIDOC Week this year, 3CR’s First Nations broadcasters shared the mic with inmates across six prisons.

As well as featuring songs, stories, opinions and poems from the men and women inside, Beyond the Bars connects them with culture and community.

The shows went to air live each weekday via 3CR 855AM, 3CR Digital and streaming.

Beyond the Bars receives financial support from the Community Broadcasting Foundation, as well as Corrections Victoria, the Koori Justice Unit and Yarra City Council.

You can listen back to the broadcast here.
