Best On Air Team winner Kyle Sandilands labels the ACRAs a “piece of shit” event

Former Assistant Editor

Less than 48 hours after receiving the gong for FM’s Best On-Air Team at the 2018 ACRAs, Kyle Sandilands has ripped into the event on air, calling radio’s night of nights a “piece of shit”.

Sandilands and KIIS 106.5 co-host Jackie O received the night’s top honour, but neither were in attendance to accept the award, with show EP Bruno Bouchet speaking on their behalf.

Kyle addressed his absence from the night this morning on the Kyle and Jackie O show after he was congratulated by newsreader Brooklyn Ross on the win.

“Funny, we didn’t even show up and we got more press than anyone that was there,” he said.

“Couldn’t be arsed. It’s a piece of shit event, that’s why I never go.

“It’s one of the world’s worst events,” he continued.

“It’s the most boring, long, drawn-out. Yes, I know I’m going to win…”

Kyle’s absence was in the firing line on the night itself, with hosts Chris Taylor and Andrew Hansen from The Chaser, among others, levelling shots at the shock jock.

It’s really simple. No more nominations or awards for K&J.
You’ve got to support the industry that supports you. Why this guy continually feels he’s above the industry, above everyone else, is beyond me.
There are kids in the industry who aim to be a top rating metro jock, to be a network leader, to win ACRAs, to create outstanding radio everyday. And yet, here’s this radio ratings heavyweight, a guy who could be flying the flag for the industry in this country, and he’s carrying on like a self-righteous pork chop and bringing the whole industry down!
Enough.

It’s just unfortunate for the kids that work on his show. They will unlikely be nominated for anything next year because of this…and who knows, it might mean something to them?

Yawn...

The arrogance is breathtaking. “Yes I know I’m going to win”…please…If Kyle doesn’t like the ACRAs then he shouldn’t be nominated or accept the awards. For the last few years I’ve put in an entry, haven’t yet been nominated for an award, but certainly don’t feel envious of my friends / work mates who were nominated or have in fact, won a gong. I’m delighted and proud of them. Kyle’s comments slap everyone who’s been nominated or won an ACRA right in the face. He’s belittling their achievements and recognition. I started in radio back in the early 80’s. I assume if I was no good on-air, I’d not be employed as an announcer today. What’s ‘good’ radio is very much in the eye of the nomination panel and everyone has a different taste of what’s worthy of an award and what’s not. For me, as long as I continue to talk local, talk about relevant stuff my audience relate to and continue to enjoy my work, that’s really all that matters to me. It’s easy for some earning millions on the large metros to look down their noses at the ACRA’s, how quickly they forget what it’s like to start out in this game, especially these days where mid dawn shifts even in the country are all but gone. If you’re starting out or trying for an ACRA each year, keep trying and ignore bitter, jaded people who inevitably linger in the fringes of all industries. Remember the old saying “one day a rooster, the next a feather duster”. Radio is a wonderful business to work in and while awards are nice, they are not the reason we do what we do. Ignore Kyle. He feeds on the attention. If the awards are so bad, he should hand the awards back. Pity the ACRA’s aren’t for the biggest ego / twit in radio, as he’d do quite well in that race I’d guess.
