Being Local Matters – Rise For Alex in the Upper Hunter

Staff Writer

Some great localism today for Grant Broadcasters, Upper Hunter stations, Power FM and 2NM.

Both brands have got right behind and have supported their local hero Alex McKinnon.

Alex is an Aberdeen local and the Newcastle Knights Player who broke two vertebrae in a tackle against the Storm in Melbourne back in March.

The NRL is supporting the Rise For Alex Fund by turning Round 19 of the 2014 Telstra Premiership competition into the “Rise For Alex Round” The NRL will be donating one dollar to the Rise For Alex Fund for every fan who attends any match during this round.

Joining both stations to promote the big day were Newcastle Knights Coach Wayne Bennett, Channel Nine Commentator Ray Warren and Ray Hadley from the  Continuous Call team.

Breaky show hosts Nix (pictured left) and Stolzy (right) said: “The outpouring of support for one of the Hunters Favourite kids has moved everybody and a real show of how this community stick together. The guys say they have never witnessed anything like this before and will never forget it.”

The Knights game against the Titans this Sunday is likely to be a sell-out crowd, and will also mark Alex’s first time back in Newcastle since that life-changing tackle.

It’s safe to say Billy McFerran, Program and Content Director is proud of his team and the local community:

“They gave us their time (guests) as we are the local station here and wanted to talk about Alex because they know what this community is like.”

“(we were) even finding it hard to hold back the tears during interviews. Just amazing”

“Everybody is getting set to travel to Hunter Stadium on Sunday”

Reaching out and connecting with the Local community is one of the strengths of our industry.
