Awkward radio on Kyle & Jackie O

Staff Writer

Kyle & Jackie O's producers organised for The Chaser's Julian Morrow to appear on the breakfast show today to chat about the conspiracy theories regarding the missing Malaysian Airlines plane. But…there was obviously some miscommunication between Morrow and the KIIS producers.

Kyle & Jackie were prepared for a serious chat while Morrow prepared some gags including a dig at 2Day FM.

“It’s disappeared without a trace, maybe it’s at 2Day FM?”

“I’m not saying she’s solely responsible, but remember Lara Bingle? I know she normally does train wrecks or car crashes, but I think this could be a new twist by Tourism Australia as part of the ‘Where the Bloody Hell Are You campaign’ to encourage people not to go overseas.”

“It’s a Coles campaign. It’s all part of the new down down promotion and they’re trying to encourage people to check in with Coles."

“The makers of Air Crash Investigation perhaps? They’ve run out of episodes?”

At one point Kyle & Jackie interrupted to ask: “Hang on, so this is a joke segment? I had all my serious facts here. I didn’t have any jokes written down, I thought it’s way too soon. We don’t even know where this plane is.”

But it became more and more awkward as Kyle asked their EP Simon Greally into the studio to explain.

“We thought by funny he (Morrow) meant he was going to take his … not take it that way," said Simon.

While they looked to their newsreader Krista Thomas for some help, she wasn't in the studio.

Kyle left the panel for a moment to try and find her and distanced himself from the segment, saying:

"I've been involved in enough shit over the years, I don't need to start at a new joint"

Morrow has released a statement on Twitter with some background on what happened in the lead up to this morning.

The Australian Radio Network also released a statement this arvo, saying:

“The segment on Kyle & Jackie O’s show this morning was intended to be based on actual Top 10 conspiracy theories on the Malaysian Airlines aircraft disappearance as reported in the news, with Julian presenting them in his unique style. It was to be in a similar style to a previous political analysis segment that he did with Kyle & Jackie in the past.

"What was heard on air today was due to a miscommunication in the briefing on the tone for the final segment between Julian and the producer.

"We apologise if anyone has been upset or offended by anything that was aired this morning, obviously this was never our intention. Our thoughts are firmly with all families who are affected by this tragic disappearance.”
