Aussie jock settles into life in Canada

Staff Writer

Matt Sutton, who recently left B105 to join Fresh FM in Winnipeg, Canada, is settling into his new role on breakfast (mornings) with Jennifer David.

Of his move Matt says:

“I backpacked across Canada a few years ago, and spent three or four days in Winnipeg. It was one of the places that really stood out for me. I was reading my travel diary before I came here, and I wrote that I would love to come back to Winnipeg for an extended stay at some time, so I jumped at the chance when it came up.”

Having different accents on the radio is something Fresh FM PD Matt Cundill says is a growing trend at Canadian stations.

“The web and podcasting and YouTube have changed everything,” he says, “Places like Australia just don’t seem that far away anymore. So why can’t you have the great performer come from somewhere else and be a part of the community right away.”

Matt though wants to be known as more than just “the guy with the funny accent on the radio.”

“At the end of the day, it’s about being relatable and building a connection with Winnipeg,” he says.

Taking with him the lessons he learnt in Australia, Matt is already delivering content for both on-air and online.

He has undertaken a 40 day campaign to become a Winnipegger with him trying everything his local listeners do – skating, skiing, tobogganing and, as you'll see in the below video, shovelling snow in -33 degrees.
