ARN Chief addresses Kyle & Jackie O network rumours after Survey 6 results

Reporter

Off the back of a cracking Survey 6 for ARN, Chief Content Officer Duncan Campbell has addressed rumours of the Kyle and Jackie O Show being networked to Melbourne.

In post-ratings interview with our sister publication RadioInfo, Campbell was asked directly whether it’s an option.

“Well I mean, we would have done that anyway, wouldn’t we, already, if we were going to do that?” Campbell says.

He points out that Kyle & Jackie O is very much a Sydney show.

“I was around when we networked Richard Stubbs back in the day – from Triple M Melbourne to Sydney.”

“The risk is that you import a show (where) all the nuances are known in one market but not known in the other.”

“You couldn’t tell the difference between where Richard was broadcasting from, but the Sydney audience weren’t familiar with the quirkiness or the nuances of the show.”

(In a recent Radio Today interview, Stubbs himself offered his own thoughts on networked Breakfast shows and whether K & J would work with Melbourne audiences).

Campbell says it’s a case of the radio rumour mill going into overdrive.

“Radio is well known for it’s rumours that get legs and everyone gets into a frenzy over, but no, we’re just focusing on the next couple of books and getting the contract negotiations done.”

Overall, Campbell says he’s very happy about ARN’s results across the board.

“We were under a lot of pressure after the last book, particularly, you know, commercially with 25 – 54.”

“This time we’ve seen a correction of that, if you like, and some strong 25 – 54 numbers.”

Kyle & Jackie O were again No. 1 in Sydney Breakfast, while Melbourne’s Gold 104.3 had a blinder of a book, which included Christian O’Connell reclaiming the No. 1 FM Breakfast spot.

Gold lifted its overall share by 3.1 percentage points to 12.7 per cent

Gold’s Breakfast and evening shows saw big gains of 3.8 and 3.5 percentage points respectively.

Melbourne is far too woke for Kyle and Jackie O

They would have meltdown if they heard Naked Dating

I would trial Kyle in Melbourne and see where it goes. They could do a sampler in the January before the ratings begin. The current breakie team could do another shift or do a nightly network show.

I love that radio is well known for rumours and getting itself into a frenzy… when that’s legit what we rely on for ratings and reveue.

I just don’t see networking a live breakfast show between Sydney and Melbourne working. Especially with K&J so prone to going off script and shaking things up on the fly. Might be better off extending the ‘Hour of Power’ off the back of Will & Woody, and repeating ahead of Jase & Lauren.

What’s great about Kyle and Jackie O today is they are Sydney! So much of their story telling is local, when you listen, you get to peak into the sydney scene and it’s one that you wouldn’t otherwise get to see.

If they were to network, the risk is that they need to become somewhat more generic. Maybe they gain another market but in doing so, give away one of the things that makes them so special. Does that leave them open for an attack on their home territory of Sydney?
Having said that, I moved interstate a while ago and still regularly stream their show – so maybe my point is mute and they are simply compelling and unmissable, so matter where the listener is based?

Meshel Laurie should join Marty on Triple M Breakfast, the show really needs someone strong like her in the mix. Meshel is a great breakfast broadcaster.

Duncan, Richard Stubbs was in early 90’s
That is over 30 YEARS ago. We have moved on. Things have changed. We have the Internet now and digital music, no CD’s
And we even have electric cars. We have a thing called social media ( which is global ) and we have mobile phones know, no cord. The world has changed, just network Kyle and Jackie and sit back and count the money roll in.
