Age names best AFL callers

Staff Writer

There are more media outlets calling AFL than any sport in Australia, and this means high demand for commentators, and high expectations of their performance.

In addition to television stations, there are plenty of radio stations with full commentary teams: 3MMM, 3AW, ABC 774, SEN in Melbourne, plus K-Rock in Geelong.

The Age today has named the best AFL commentators in Australia, as compiled by a panel of experts.

They have listed Dennis Cometti (left) at number one, below is the rest of their list:

1 Dennis Cometti
2 Bruce McAvaney
3 Brian Taylor
4 Tim Lane
5 Dwayne Russell
6 Garry Lyon
7 David King
8 James Brayshaw
9 Matthew Lloyd
10 Leigh Matthews
11 Gerard Healy
12 Stan Alves
13 Gerard Whateley
14 Anthony Hudson
15 Eddie McGuire
16 David Parkin
17 Tom Harley
18 Luke Darcy
19 Robert Walls
20 Matt Granland

And they have named retired Richmond star Matthew Richardson as the rising star of the list. Interestingly they have also named the commentators that they don't rate.

Matthew Campbell
Alastair Lynch
Liam Pickering
Glen Jakovich
Rex Hunt
Kevin Bartlett
Brad Johnson
Jason Dunstall
Leigh Colbert

Whether you agree or disagree, it is a reminder of just how many AFL commentators there are going around!
