A masterclass in class: Laurel, Gary & Mark host their final 4BC Breakfast show
“Guys, I really hope this isn’t goodbye forever.”
This sentiment was just one of many from loyal listeners, as Laurel Edwards, Gary Clare and Mark Hine hosted their final Breakfast show on Brisbane’s 4BC this morning.
The station announced earlier this month that it’s taking a new direction in the Breakfast timeslot.
Today, after returning from their survey break at the start of this week, Laurel, Gary and Mark wrapped up their final shift on air together at 4BC, celebrating a remarkable 30 years of love and laughter, reminiscing about the good times and great memories they built during their days at 4KQ.
2GB talkback host and Nine Radio colleague Ray Hadley was among the guests on this morning’s final show, describing it as a truly momentous occasion, handled with great class.
“May I congratulate all three on you on the most professional way in which you are handling your last shift,” he said.
“It’s an example to everyone of class and dignity.”
To Laurel – who recently notched up a record-breaking 30 years on Brisbane’s Breakfast radio airwaves – he said “You leave behind you a legacy that will never be matched.”
Laurel’s husband, country music legend Troy Cassar-Daley also called in to congratulate the team, saying it’s been beautiful view from the top of the hill for the trio.
“I’m always proud. I know I don’t say it too much, but I’m always really proud.”
Laurel, Gary and Mark thanked 4BC, Nine Radio and their colleagues, saying “They’ve been absolutely wonderful to us.”
In signing off, Laurel said “The direction 4BC is going is not suited to us, which is fine. We will get to sleep in in the future.”
The team said special thanks go to their families … and their listeners.
“You’ve stuck with us through thick and thick and shared your stories with us.”
The show then officially wrapped up with a fitting song: Green Day’s Time of your Life.
Weekends host Peter Fegan will look after the 4BC Breakfast shift until the end of the year.
It was a fitting farewell to a great team.
Nobody denies their chemistry or teamwork or their legacy.
They worked, just not at 4BC.
I contacted Nova 106.9 Switch and I spoke to a nice lady. I advised her to advise management at Norva Brisbane to sign low Gary and Mark to be feelings for Ashv glutes and Susie O’Neill the lady who I spoke to said I think really hard about radio and what is needed. Hopefully the three amigos will be snapped up by Nova in Brisbane so that Gary and Mark can be on FM radio in Brisbane for the first time a long time on AM radio in Brisbane between 4KQ and 4BC
Ho hum. Please, can they just go off and retire.
3 Absolute Australian legends.
Incredible longevity, and recognised internationally as the only am breakfast team to get to number 1 against fm stations.
Laurel and Handy G have been together more than 30 years. And i read handy Gary has been on air since 1979!
Sad day
Congratulations to Laurel, Gary and Mark for the best radio show in Australia! I won’t be listening to 4BC now they’re not doing their show. They deserve a wonderful retirement but mornings won’t be the same without them. I hope another radio station is smart enough to sign them up – maybe later in the day so they don’t have to get up at 4am! Thank you for all your hard work and all best wishes for the future!
