Scoop: ARN parts ways with Breakfast duo Paul & Lise

Staff Writer

UPDATE 01/07/2019: ARN has officially confirmed the departure of Paul & Lise.

The network announced that a review of 96FM’s strategy and direction mean that the current show won’t return after mid-year survey break.

“We would like to thank Paul and Lise for their contribution to 96FM and our Perth listeners over these past 18 months,” said ARN national content director Duncan Campbell.

“Since they started, the station has recorded its highest ever cumulative audience. Paul and Lise are talented professionals and we wish them well for the future.

“We’ll be announcing a new Breakfast show soon in line with our renewed strategy.”

Paul & Lise were quoted as saying; “We have had a great time at 96FM and are fully supportive of the new direction that the station’s taking and we wish 96FM much success.”

ORIGINAL STORY: ARN’s shakeup of 96FM Perth continues, with the station parting ways with Breakfast team Paul & Lise, according to multiple sources.

Paul Hogan and Lisa Fernandez have been in the slot since the end of 2017, when they replaced Carmen & Fitzi.

There’s been little turnaround in 96FM’s ratings since the change, with the show rating a 7.1% share of listening as of Survey #3 this year.

In the first survey of 2018, the show was rating 7.8%.

The move follows the appointment of Gary Roberts as managing director earlier this year.

Former Nova Adelaide host Shane Lowe was brought in to anchor the Breakfast show at the start of 2019, but the change has failed to deliver a ratings turnaround.

Rob McCasker took over as content director in late 2018, but had left the station by April.

Gary Roberts first scalp. Bet he tries to get rid of that crap show from Melbourne, Will and Woody, next.

Not sure even Gary can turn around this one. The Perth market has some great heritage shows. The issue with 96 is much bigger than breakfast – there’s at least 5 different formats depending on what time of day you listen.

Rumour, the old 6PR Breakfast Show team “Millsy and TonyMac”, being lined up to take over?

Any others heard this whisper?

Disappointing to see a once great radio station languishing at the bottom.

The problem with 96FM was aligning it with KIIS in the first place. It should never have happened. Ditch the networked KIIS content and the station may start to gain ground. If they have to have something networked from the East, use Pure Gold content – there, problem solved 🙂

@anonymous (28 Jun 2019 – 3:18 pm) – obviously you’re not from Melbourne, because no Melburnian would ever say, want or listen to, K&J being networked into KIIS101 Breakfast.

Shane has had no imput in any way into breakfast show push buttons no talking manament dissiion so how he was supposed to help move ratings big step down from his breakfeast show in Adelaide were he connected with listeners every day and they loved it feel so bad for him just let the ones on air connect with there listeners a show is made around that connections chemistry is there let it shine

Here comes KISS 96.1. No point creating a Gold network as it’s not as profitable as a KISS network and the Gold equivalent in Brisbane and Adelaide is AM. Kiss Perth would only need a big talent breakfast show, 1 workday announcer and the rest is networked, so cheaper to run. I’d expect the same results as kiss Melbourne in Perth, with Garry Roberts or not.

Holy shit what has happened. Has honestly got to be the worst radio programming disaster in 20 years of radio. How do you take a station from 2 to 7 in a matter of months lol.

Brad – couldn’t agree with you any more – spot on

@brad @Rob not only have they achieved a 7 they successfully strive to maintain it over the last couple of years. @Doodlebug I think that’s what ARN had in mind originally, it has got them to where they are today.

Think we all know what the programming problem is. Mix 1065 was rating +6 until old mate arrived. Took it to a wave in Survey 4 of 3 in 2013 after 3 breakfast shows that’s when a nice offer was issued to an opposition team in Sydney
Since then
Adelaide same
Melbourne backwards
Brisbane (no doubt nova Entertainment are concerned)
Perth, wow mess

I would do a more music breakfast on 96.
Watch the wise old men from the East screw this up again.

Wtf? How is it being reported Shane Lowe failed to increase ratings? The show is Paul and Lise. He was never given the chance to contribute to the show at all. The show saw three surveys, one they went up and the station receive the most amount of listeners they’ve had in the past 8 years.
Hoe did they expect Shane to impact the show when 96fm only allowed him to do the ins and outs of breaks? He had no opportunity to contribute to the show at all. They only mentioned his name twice the whole time he was there. What a joke. Completely wasted talent in that position. I bet he’s glad he gone.

Will and Woody perfect they are a Perth standard not suitable for national. They are dying in Melbourne and only do well in Sydney because of Kyle and Jackie.

Such a sorry to see Paul and Lise go. They were the reason my radio stayed on the channel. We need more laughter in life . Sooo good for the soul. I wish them well.

96fm has been making the worst decision in the past 2 years in regards to direction.
Axeing Paul and Lise was a bad move. “Let’s cut the only hosts who are genuinely funny and replace with a pair of monotones who put me to sleep”.
I’ve had to shift to triple J for breakfast even after their horrendous attempt at replacing breakfast hosts. Now that’s saying something.
How about restructuring the board of directors of 96fm who are remind me of dried up prunes.

I was really starting to get into listening to Paul & Lise, very sad to see them go, the current hosts are dreadful, feel like I’m 70 listening in. It’s impossible to listen to Hit 92.9 without Ryan. Heidi and Xave are great but with Tim stepping in it’s just painful. Nova is just obnoxious morning and night, I literally have to turn the radio off in the mornings now. I’ll give 92.9 a try with Pete but for now it’s radio off 🙁

Bring back Paul and lise the new breakfast show is so boring putting me to sleep I have stopped listening to radio altogether as nova and 94.5 are worse haven’t had a good laugh since Paul and lise left I am sure there are many other listeners that share my view.
