4 weeks of ACRA’s Finalists Fever 2013 #3

Staff Writer

There are thousands of hard-working, dedicated and amazingly creative people throughout the radio industry – and every year a small fraction of those people make the short list as a finalist in the ACRA’s.

Just like we did last year, over the next month, Radio Today will shine a spotlight on the best of the best.

4 weeks of ACRA's Finalists Fever – counting down the days to the big event on October 12 by profiling the finalists across all categories. You can get involved by emailing us here.

In #3 we feature another finalist for Best Show Producer (Talk), we chat to a Nova Sales Director whose team is up for Best Station Sales Achievement, and we start with a Best Music Presenter finalist from Triple M Sydney.

Triple M, Sydney NSW, Southern Cross Austereo

Give us a quick snapshot of your radio background

I started in radio in 1987 and I began my ‘’on-air ‘’ career at 2NZ Inverell in 1990.
I have worked in the early days in Goulburn and then with WINTV /i98fm in Wollongong.
Most of my career has been here in Sydney and for most of that time I have been here at Triple M.

What’s the best part of your job ?

Probably calling the NRL, although I still love the music shift I do every day. JA (Jamie Angel) is a good bloke to work for.

What are your key achievements over the past 12 months ?

It has been great to settle back into Triple M after a 3 year stint at DMG. In that time I have some successful surveys as the morning announcer and I have become part of the footy call team which has been great.

You can’t make a speech on the night but you can here. So let’s pretend you won…. what would you say ?

If I won the first person I would wanna thank is JA and Dobbo for bringing me back.

John Stanley Weekend Breakfast Program
2UE, Sydney NSW, Fairfax Radio Network

Give us a quick snapshot of your radio background.

My first job out of university was with Alan Jones back in his 2UE days when John Laws was in the office down the hall. I then went on to become part of 2UE's newsroom and produced the Sunday morning programme. From there I headed to London where I joined the BBC and went from working with 5 Live to News 24 and BBC World. When Sydney life called me back I freelanced for years and then the chance to work with John Stanley and create a new show with Weekend Breakfast came up and I came back home to 2UE.

What’s the best part of your job ?

The chance to meet incredible people and find stories that resonate with our listeners. I also love working with John Stanley, he's like no one else I've worked with and I'm really proud of what we've created.

What are your key achievements over the past 12 months ?

Going to work at 3am on a Saturday and Sunday and maintaining a social life. Oh, you mean work related?

I’m proud of the fact that we’ve continued to grow our audience. Not only has Weekend Breakfast regularly enjoyed the highest ratings on 2UE, our average ratings are double the station’s average.

I also love finding guests who make compelling interviews, from an exclusive with former CIA agent Tony Mendez, the man Ben Affleck plays in the movie Argo, to Gary Connery, the stuntman who jumped out of a helicopter dressed as the Queen in the London Olympics.

You can’t make a speech on the night but you can here. So let’s pretend you won…. what would you say ?

This is such a surprise… I didn't prepare anything but I'd like to thank… oh, is that the music playing me off.
