2MG/Real FM’s Basso named Citizen of the Year

A stalwart of regional radio has been acknowledged by his local community at the annual Australia Day awards of the Mid-Western Regional Council in Central NSW.

Mudgee’s Craig ‘Basso’ Bassett was awarded the top local honour of ‘Citizen of the Year’ for his ongoing outstanding efforts to keep locals informed, particularly in difficult times.

He has been a 2MG Breakfast show presenter for over 20 years and in recent years added the role of news editor for both 2MG and Real FM.

Station Manager Mal Rock said “Craig is one of the most committed and determined radio people I know. As his co-workers, we see how much he puts into all his roles for the station and the whole community.”

“We are all stoked for him to get this recognition. There are lots of ways to achieve success, but not many match achieving the level of respect from your audience that they nominate you to be their Citizen of the Year.”

Part of Craig’s citation from the Australia Day ceremony said, “Craig is a passionate advocate for the district, be it community service, local news and reporting on the things that really matter and affect the region.”

“In the recent natural disasters of drought, bushfires and floods, Craig’s reporting has been outstanding, respectful, and responsible and in many cases comforting to those affected.”

“Craig’s reporting during COVID was tireless and above all accurate, earning the respect of the medical fraternity, local police and the Mid-Western Regional Council.”

“Craig has never been one to self-promote or seek recognition for his work and his integrity and ongoing work ethic is appreciated.”
