102 wonderful years: Radio loses a true pioneer in Mona Swinton

Reporter

Most people don’t a live a life as long or quite as incredible as Mona Swinton.

A true radio pioneer, Mona is today being remembered for her incredible contribution to the industry, following her death at the age of 102.

Not only was Mona a foundation member of Victorian community station 3WAY FM in Warrnambool, she was also a popular presenter – hosting twice weekly shows – as well as a producer and a valued presence on the station’s committee.

She held these roles from the very beginning right up until she officially hung up the headphones in 2020, at the age of 98.

Mona worked as a decoder during World War II.

From celebrating the end of the war in Times Square to travelling around the world at the dawn of the jet age, Mona – a proud grandma – was always known to live life to the fullest.

Colleague Ann Morris is among the many to pay tribute to Mona, saying “She certainly did live a full life – and we at 3WAY FM are in her debt as one of our founding members, long-standing presenter and so much more.”

3WAY FM credits Mona as being one of its driving forces and says her enthusiasm, expertise, dedication and commitment to radio will be greatly missed.

“Mona leaves a long and rich legacy in the station’s history, along with many deep and meaningful friendships with all of our crew.”

“Rest well Dear Mona and thank you for being a valued contributor  and friend both on air and off air to all staff and our listeners.”

A memorial service will be held for Mona in Warrnambool this Monday, August 19.
