KOFM and 4TOFM rebrand under Triple M

Former Assistant Editor

SCA have announced that KOFM Newcastle and 4TOFM Townsville are set to relaunch under the Triple M brand.

KOFM will become Triple M Newcastle on Friday, November 9 while 4TOFM launches as Triple M Townsville on Monday, September 3.

The two stations will fall under the national Triple M Network, which will grow to 36 stations across Australia (plus four digital stations).

Both stations will continue to produce local shows and content, including Tanya and Steve in Newcastle on Breakfast, and Pricey for Breakfast in Townsville, as well as the widest variety of music, sport and comedy.

“We are proud and passionate about the communities we are part of and the local content we deliver,” said SCA head of content for regional radio Mickey Maher.

“We’re excited to bring one of the country’s most iconic media brands, Triple M to Newcastle and Townsville.”

Triple M’s nationally syndicated Drive program Kennedy Molloy will continue to be broadcast to both stations on weekdays from 4pm-6pm.

KOFM and 4TOFM will also hear the Triple M NRL call from Thursday to Sunday throughout the season.

In 1980 Triple M launches in Sydney. By 2019 the brand has spread right across the eastern seaboard. Goodbye regional stations. Goodbye local branding. Sydney is everything. Everything is Sydney. Newcastle is now Sydney. Newcastle’s Triple M is now playing Sydney’s best rock.

I was never too sure what KO or NX or stood for but I knew that – somehow – they were unique to Newcastle. MMM means Sydney. Or Griffith. Or Melbourne. Or Brisbane. Or Albany. Or the Riverina. Or Bendigo. Or Cairns. Or anywhere that radio can be heard.

Agreed @Nick Bartlett. http://radiotoday.com.au/austereo-fails-triple-m-re-badge/ An opportune time to re-post the opinion piece that ran on this site last year. I’d be interested to know if the re-badge has impacted on listener numbers (or advertising revenue) over the past 12 months? No-one at SCA is ever going to admit to any negative impact if it has. Maybe people don’t give a toss but it still doesn’t feel right to me.

Nothing changes. They already have NRL, Kennedy Molloy et al. It’s just a name change. Simples.

The 3 most respected names of Townsville are Johnathan Thurston, Pricey and 4TO.

The other “benefit” of the rebranding will be the ability to bring the “big giveaways” to the smaller markets. They have already started doing it for the metros for the most recent competitions like elevator from hell being contested in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

They’ve picked their “strongest” performing of the remaining heritage brands to convert to MMM, but what about the under performing Gold Fm and 2GO?

Why not do them all?

4TO is not only an institution but one of the strongest brands in FNQ. For those of us who were lucky enough to be a part of the brand galvanization over the many years we all felt it was something special and treated the brand as custodians. Justifying the change is a jumble of weasel words coming from the mouths of those who simply just don’t get what 4TO really means. I would be interested in how you can trash a brand worth $m’s and by inference justifying it as progress. I can understand how the decision was made but in this case, it’s simply not right.

Or Mix 106.3 Canberra? There are so many Triple M mentions that go to air. Change it over!

There is a 94% chance that the decision to dump the 4TO branding was made by people with a view of the Opera House.
