Women now leading the way in the breakfast radio ratings war.

Staff Writer

Radio and the media in general has long been a male dominated domain.

But a lot has changed over the years with women now taking a leading role in breakfast in 3 of Australia’s most competitive radio markets Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

In the last GFK radio survey released last month, female hosts are leading the way in the key breakfast time slot.

  • In Sydney Jackie O Henderson is number 1 FM on ARN’s KIISFM with co host Kyle Sandilands.
  • In Melbourne FiFi Box is number 2 FM on SCA’s FOXFM with co host Dave Thornton.
  • And in Brisbane Robin Bailey is number 1 on ARN’s 97.3 with co hosts Bob & Terry.

It’s been a while since the breakfast radio ratings in some of the biggest metropolitan markets have been lead by women.

And with women also leading breakfast shows in other markets around Australia it shows the power of women on air in radio has never been stronger. No longer are they ‘ sidekicks ‘ to their male counterparts.

Other female on air talent on the rise include Chrissie Swan, Em Rusciano, Meshel Laurie, Heidi Lee Anderson, Jo Stanley and Tanya Hennessy all seen as future ratings winners.

Sydney’s Amanda Keller has been near the top of the ratings  for some time, whilst Wendy Harmer who now appears on 702ABC mornings (Sydney) lead the way as the very first woman to star in her own show, and won the FM ratings during a decade long run at number 1 on Sydney’s 2dayfm which ended in 2005.

Harmer said “It’s truly gratifying to see so many women leading the way in radio right around the country.

“We’ve come a long way since the mantra from radio executives was, ‘women don’t like to listen to other women’. Women are bringing their smarts, humour and professionalism to the airwaves and are becoming some of our best loved on-air personalities and listened to by both men and women. It’s a revolution that’s long overdue and it’s a thrill to be a part of it all.”
